Be Gentle With Yourself

On Self Awareness

"getting rid of our barriers or buffers all at once would be an intolerably painful experience (for we would have to see ourselves as we actually are) and that could easily throw our lives into chaos."

- Gurdjieff

One of Gurdjieff's work ideas was to learn to see the buffers we have. That is hard enough. It would be impossible to drop all buffers in our personality. This is a statement made to students in intense psychological and esoteric study where mental health is a concern.

Just try to see one buffer in one's personality and that in itself would be an achievement.

A buffer is something in the personality that allows behaviors to occur that might be in direct contradiction of what other parts allow. The object is to remove buffers one by one by "self-remembering" or becoming aware of ourselves. Eliminating buffers methodically allows the being in integrate itself into its true unity. To leave them in place allows a fractured and disparate personality to continue its suffering and damaging exitence.

Thank you Sensei...I used it out of context.

I wanted to express the need for one to remember that Self-Awareness or becoming self-aware, may be a slow process, and that one should not be hard on themselves for moving in what may seem, in our limited reality, as not fast enough.

Patience I think, is what I should have said. Patience with ones self.
